Welcome / Roll Intro Lecture (Listening & Note-taking) Skill Overview (Reading & Speaking)
HW: 1. In handout from Melissa: TOEFL iBT Preparation Tips. *If you were sitting in the side of class near the door, read p. xxviii (Tips 1-5). *If you were sitting in the side of class near the windows, read p. xxix (Tips 6-10). -You will explain the key points from these tips to a classmate on Monday.
2. Speaking Practice: -Go to www.kirsches.org/Resources . Scroll down to Listening. Choose 1 source/link to listen to. Record a 45 second response on what you learned from listening topic. Email Jane as sound file attachment before Monday's class (earlier than that is better!). |

Week 2 |
HW: 1. Go to http://esl-lab.com , scroll 1/2 way down page to 3rd section: Listening Quizzes for Academic Purposes. Choose at least 1 topic under any skill level (med, diff, very diff). 2. At top of page, click on Quiz Script, and then the play button under Listening Exercises. Read along as you Listen. Listen/read as many times as needed. 3. Click on Back to Quiz at top of page. Under II. Listening Exercises, click on the play play button and listen and take notes. 4. Answer the 5 questions to take the quiz. Click on Final Score and read your results. 5. Email Jane your score and the topic TITLE and LEVEL (med, diff, very diff). |
HW: Diagnostic Independent Speaking: What personal quality describes you most accurately? Why? Please give details and examples to support your response. 1. Read the list of adjectives on p. lxiii or lxiv. Choose one that describes you best. Think of 2 reasons why that is true. Add 1-2 details or examples for each reason. Use transition words to connect your ideas. Add a short conclusion at end if time. 2. See the sample response on p. lxv as a guide and practice saying it aloud for 45 seconds. 3. Practice your own response as many times as needed until you can say it smoothy, clearly, and correctly in 45 secs. 4. Email Jane your sound file attachment. Be sure to put your name and TOEFL hw in the subject line. (Let me know if you have questions.) DUE before Sunday, Feb. 5 @ 6 p.m. |
