Hi there! I'm a teacher of English as a Second Language at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. I love getting to know my students and helping them improve their English during the semester. I like it when students are self-motivated to improve--not only for the sake of getting a good grade, but because they are truly curious and eager to learn. I also appreciate those students who are enthusiastic, form friendships with classmates from other countries, and always do their best.
I'm from a small city in southern Virginia (the REAL Virginia!) My major in college was Anthropology with a minor in Linguistics. After graduation, I worked in Japan for 3 years, which was fun and exciting most of the time but frustrating at times too. I appreciated those who were patient with me as I learned the language, explained things to me when I didn't understand, and welcomed me to join them for many special experiences. Those 3 years were a wonderful experience in which I grew a lot and learned many things. As a result, I have a special place in my heart for those who move or visit here from other countries.
After returning to the States, I did many different jobs: historical interpreter, Japanese interpreter and translator, English tutor, bank teller, customer service rep for international travelers, animal clinic receptionist, and a teacher's assistant for a beginning Japanese class (an electronic classroom).
Since finishing my Master's degree at George Mason University, I have been working at the English Language Institute in Fairfax, VA.
I am married, have 2 cats, play the guitar and handbells, teach ESL at my church, and enjoy reading, emailing, walking, talking with friends, and helping other people.
