REGISTRATION

 Classes start
 HW:
1. Write an essay: What are the features of a good class environment? [Include an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.]
2. Read "International Marketing Mistakes" - handout.
 HW: 
1. Re-write your letter about yourself and use the corrections given. Give me your old and new paper.
2. Read online about international marketing mistakes and choose 1 to tell the class about tomorrow.
3. Finish the handout inferences/ conclusions (do # 3, 4).
 HW: 
1. Do handout: Present Tense.
2. Do Part 2 reading on International Culture AND do vocabulary check, pp. 11-13.
 HW: 
1. Do Reading 3 AND vocab check, pp 18-21.
2. Write 5 sentences using Modals of Advice (should, shouldn't, ought to), pp. 26-27.
Week 2

 GMU/ELI CLOSED for Memorial Day Holiday

 HW: Practice Verb Review dialog with partner and do 2 in class tomorrow.  HW: 
1. Write 5 sentences using for, and, but, so, yet (1 each).
2. Read News for You article on p. 3 (about doctor who removed a live round from soldiers head). Write a 3-4 sentence summary about it and prepare to discuss in class.
 HW: 
1. Write 5 sentences using adjective clauses.
2. Do Editing handout to review grammar points-Ch. 1.
 HW: 
1. Write an expository paragraph that answers the question:
What is one thing that multi-national companies should understand about your culture? (see pp. 32-34) (1st draft, ungraded)
Week 3
 HW: Study for Ch 1 Test.  HW:   HW:   HW:   HW: 
Read and listen to World Cup article and write 3 sentences: 1 with an adjective clause and 2 with passive.
Week 4

1. Finish Past Participle word search.
2. Study for quiz tomorrow on past participles and passive.

 HW:
DUE FRIDAY:
Do p. 54, H. Response Writing. Write a paragraph about one of these topics (but not about gifts).

ELI Field Trip / No ELI classes. 

Meet at Finley betwee 10:30-10:45 to carpool to Burke Lake Park. OR Meet us at the park around 11 or 11:15. Bring food to share.

 HW:
1. Write a sentence for each of the words that you missed on the past participle quiz.
2. Revise and rewrite your HW paragraph (p. 54), checking for spelling, verb tenses, run-on sentences, and comma splices.
Week 5
 HW:
1. Re-write Chapter 1 writing about multi-national companies (fix the mistakes). Turn in 1st and 2nd drafts tomorrow.
2. Study Ch 1 vocab for test.
 HW:
Choose 1 article in News for You to read. After you read it, write a short summary of it and write  your opinion of the article. (What did you think about it?)
 HW:
1. Study for Chapter 2 test.

2. Do outline of Ch 2 writing topic on economic system of your country.
 HW: Study for Midterm Exam (chapter 1 & 2 from Qu est 2, essay organization for in-class writing.)

Bring your Reading Chart to class if you forgot it today.
 MIDTERM EXAM
-Ch 1 & 2 test
-In-class writing (essay)

HW:
1. Self-Reflection: answer the 4 questions.
2. Do an outline for your essay before you write.
3. Write an essay for p. 60 Writing Assignment: What is the economic system for one country you know?

Thesis statement: The economic system in (your country name) is a mix of ___. Write an introduction, 2-3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Bring self-reflection, outline, and essay to your student-teacher conference on Monday.
Week 6
 Midterm Conferences (student-teacher).
No Core Class. Meet me in the classroom at your appointment time.

 HW: 
1. Watch video (many times ok) and fill out the worksheet.
2. Review p. 98 and write 4 sentences about how soccer and football are the same and different.

 HW: Read article about Am vs Eng soccer. Make a chart of how they are similar and different.

 HW: Chose 2 things you know(such as 2 buildings, types of cooking, sports, etc.). Draw a diagram (2 connecting circles) or a chart (like we did for HW and on the board). Your chart/diagram will show how the 2 things are similar / different.

 HW: Re-write paper you received from teacher in class. Fix all the mistakes.

Week 7

4th of July Holiday Observed.
GMU/ELI closed
(no classes)

 HW: study ch 3 for quiz tomorrow (book & handouts)

-Pronouns (p. 81, p. 73 handout, Practice 15 handout)
-Transition Expressions: compare-contrast (p. 98, handout)
-Order of adjectives (p. 97)
 HW: Do error correction for verb tense review  HW:
1. Re-write essay (draft 3) for a grade.
2. Read p. 107-108.
 HW:
1. Write a compare & contrast essay (ok to change topic if want).

2. Read p. 113.
Week 8

 HW:
1. Read p. 118-119.
2. Bring in an interesting newspaper article with a picture.

 HW:
1. Finish Practice 58 handout--Ex 2 & 3 (infinitives of purpose)
2. Attend Newseum field trip Wed and fill out Ethics in Media handout.
3. Write 2-3 sentences with your opinion about something you saw, read, or heard at the Newseum.

BRING all 3 of these to class on Thursday.

Week 9
 HW: Revise Compare-contrast essay (Ch 3 writing).  HW:
1. Review p. 126 and do exercises 2 & 3. Read top and bottom boxes on p. 127.
2. Read News for You newspaper and do handout, pp. 2-4.

 HW:
1. Do ex. D & E, pp. 128-129.
2. Study Ch 4 for test review.

HW:

 TEST, Ch 4 
 HW: 
1. Listen & read 2 front page articles of News for You. Prepare to discuss.
2. Choose topic for cause / effect essay. Write your PLAN as diagram or outline: title, thesis statement, & topic sentences for body paragraphs.
Week 10
